In front of a lively crowd of 41,879 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United came up short in a hard-fought battle, falling 1-0 to the New England Revolution on Saturday night.
The lone goal of the match came in the 36th minute, when New England captain Carles Gil converted from the penalty spot after Emmanuel Latte Lath was called for a foul inside the box. Gil’s left-footed strike to the top left corner proved to be the difference-maker on a night filled with chances for both sides.
Atlanta thought they had taken the lead earlier in the first half when Miguel Almirón found the back of the net in the 28th minute. However, after a VAR review, the goal was overturned due to an offside call on Pedro Amador in the buildup.
Despite a flurry of attempts from Atlanta in the second half—including a header off the post by Jamal Thiaré and several blocked shots in stoppage time—the equalizer never came. The Five Stripes finished the match with intensity, pushing forward deep into the nine minutes of added time at the end of the second half, but New England’s defense held strong to secure the clean sheet.
The match saw its share of physical play, with multiple fouls, yellow cards, and injury stoppages. Notably, 6 minutes of stoppage time were added at the end of the first half, and the second half officially began in the 51st minute after extended delays.
