Golden State Valkyries Sign Tiffany Hayes as First Major Free Agent Acquisition

The Golden State Valkyries have made a bold statement ahead of their inaugural 2025 season by reuniting former Atlanta Dream teammates Tiffany Hayes and Monique Billings. Hayes, the 2024 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, and Billings, a versatile forward selected in the expansion draft, are expected to play key roles in shaping the identity of the new Bay Area franchise.

Hayes, who averaged 9.5 points per game with the Las Vegas Aces last season, became the Valkyries’ first major free-agent signing. The 12-year WNBA veteran spent her first 10 seasons with the Atlanta Dream, establishing herself as a dynamic scorer and leader. Her signing has been hailed as a significant victory for the Valkyries as they aim to build a competitive roster.

General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin praised Hayes for her experience and on-court impact. “Tiffany’s leadership and scoring ability will be invaluable as we establish our identity in the Bay Area,” Nyanin said.

After announcing her retirement in December 2023, Hayes made a surprise return in May 2024 to join the Las Vegas Aces. Her comeback proved impactful, earning her Sixth Woman of the Year honors and a spot on Azerbaijan’s 3×3 basketball team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Monique Billings, known for her defensive versatility and high-energy play, spent six seasons with the Atlanta Dream. The 6’4” forward, a UCLA alum, was drafted 15th overall by the Dream in the 2018 WNBA Draft and quickly became a reliable contributor on both ends of the court. After her tenure with Atlanta, Billings played for the Los Angeles Sparks, Dallas Wings, and Phoenix Mercury, continuing to showcase her defensive versatility and high-energy play. Selected by the Valkyries during the expansion draft, she became their first official signing, bringing valuable interior presence and versatility to Golden State’s frontcourt.

Head coach Natalie Nakase expressed excitement about reuniting Hayes and Billings, who played multiple seasons together in Atlanta. “Tiffany and Monique are both dynamic players who know how to compete at the highest level. Their leadership will be invaluable as we build this team from the ground up,” Nakase said.

The reunion has generated significant buzz among fans, with posts on X highlighting anticipation for the duo’s contributions to the franchise.

The Valkyries’ inaugural game is set for May 16, 2025, at Chase Center against the Los Angeles Sparks. With Hayes and Billings leading the charge, the expansion team looks poised to make its mark in WNBA history.
