The Atlanta Hawks are set to return home to the award-winning State Farm Arena on Saturday, 12/21, to kick off their longest homestand of the season so far. The four-game stretch, beginning with the Memphis Grizzlies, provides a key opportunity for the Hawks to build momentum after navigating a challenging road-heavy schedule. Having already played 15 games on the road—tied for the third-most in the league—the team looks to capitalize on home-court advantage and continue their recent run of strong performances.
Hawks Hit Their Stride
Although Atlanta fell 126-133 to the San Antonio Spurs on 12/19, the Hawks showcased an impressive team effort. Four players—De’Andre Hunter (27), Trae Young (23), Jalen Johnson (22), and Larry Nance Jr. (21)—each scored 20 or more points, marking the first time this season the team has achieved such a feat. This balanced scoring attack highlights the depth and versatility of the roster, which has been a driving force for Atlanta in recent weeks.
The Hawks’ bench, in particular, has been a revelation. Over their last 10 games, Atlanta’s reserves have averaged 50.3 points per game while holding opponents’ second units to just 27.5 points, resulting in an astounding +228-point differential—the best 10-game span for a Hawks bench since at least 1970-71 and the largest in the NBA this season. Through 28 games, the Hawks’ bench is averaging 41.9 points per game, leading the Eastern Conference and ranking third overall in the league.
Standout Performances Fuel Atlanta’s Success
De’Andre Hunter
Hunter continues to thrive in his role off the bench, delivering consistent production. Against San Antonio, the 6’7” forward notched a season-high 27 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-8 from deep. With his performance, Hunter surpassed Mike Bibby for 10th place in franchise history in made three-pointers.
Hunter has been on a tear lately, scoring 15 or more points in 10 consecutive games off the bench—a franchise record. Over this stretch, the former UVA standout is averaging 22.1 points on an impressive .503/.515/.851 shooting split. His efficiency places him in elite company, as he joins Nikola Vucevic as one of only two NBA players since 11/27 to average 20+ points while shooting over 50% from the field, 50% from three, and 80% from the free-throw line.
Larry Nance Jr.
Larry delivered a standout performance against the Spurs, recording his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. The veteran forward also tied a career-high with five three-pointers (5-of-6) while contributing two assists, a steal, and a block. Nance’s performance makes him one of only three bench players this season to tally 21+ points and 13+ rebounds in a single game, and the only one to do so with .600 FG% and .800 3FG% shooting splits.
Ice Trae So Icyyyy
Trae Young continues to lead the charge for Atlanta, solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier playmakers. On 12/19, Young notched his 170th career game with 20+ points and 10+ assists, tying Tim Hardaway and Kevin Johnson for the 9th-most such games in NBA history.
Young currently leads the league in assists per game (12.2) and total assists (330), while also topping the charts in total steals. His ability to consistently impact games as both a scorer and facilitator has been instrumental for the Hawks.
Looking Ahead
With their bench firing on all cylinders and key players hitting their stride, the Hawks have a prime opportunity to take advantage of this homestand. The Memphis Grizzlies, who have struggled to find their footing this season, present a favorable matchup to kick things off.
Beyond Memphis, Atlanta will face a mix of challenging opponents over the next three games, with every win critical to staying competitive in the Eastern Conference standings.
For the Hawks, this homestand isn’t just a chance to secure wins—it’s an opportunity to establish themselves as a force in the East and set the tone for the rest of the season.
