On Monday, Nov. 25, Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Grady Jarrett carried on a heartfelt tradition, hosting his eighth annual Thanksgiving dinner at The Shepherd’s Inn, part of the Atlanta Mission. This shelter provides critical support to men experiencing homelessness in the city.
The evening was a celebration of community and compassion, as Jarrett was joined by the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders and team mascot Freddie Falcon. Together, they served meals, shared conversations, and spread joy to those in need, ensuring everyone felt the warmth of Thanksgiving. Volunteers at the event wore personalized t-shirts with “Grady Bunch” displayed on the front and Jarrett’s name and number 97 on the back, highlighting their unity and dedication to the cause.
A Legacy of Giving
Grady Jarrett’s commitment to giving back is deeply rooted in his family legacy. His father, Jessie Tuggle, played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1987 to 2000, becoming a beloved figure in the city. Jarrett has carried on this legacy of leadership and service, using his platform to uplift vulnerable members of the community.
Before the meal, Jarrett addressed the attendees, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to give back. He shared how honored he felt to use his platform to support and uplift the community.
The Shepherd’s Inn: A Vital Resource
Located in the heart of Atlanta, The Shepherd’s Inn offers comprehensive services for single men experiencing homelessness. These include not only meals and beds but also laundry facilities, social services, life skills classes, one-on-one counseling, vocational training, and spiritual services. Through clinical and small group sessions, the shelter aims to help men rebuild their lives and re-enter the workforce.
A Sobering Reality in Atlanta
Atlanta is home to more than a quarter of Georgia’s homeless population, which totals nearly 10,000 individuals. The statistics paint a grim picture of the challenges faced by this vulnerable community:
•81% have experienced physical or sexual abuse.
•58% report symptoms of trauma.
•57% live with a chronic medical condition.
•46% are under- or unemployed.
•30% struggle with drug or alcohol addiction.
These figures highlight the importance of organizations like the Atlanta Mission and the efforts of community leaders like Jarrett, who work tirelessly to make a difference.
A Night of Hope
The Thanksgiving dinner at The Shepherd’s Inn was about more than just food; it was about fostering connection and offering hope. For many of the men in attendance, it was an opportunity to experience the kindness of others and feel seen during a difficult time.
As plates were filled and stories were shared, Jarrett reminded everyone that community is at the heart of the holiday season. His continued dedication to serving others is a testament to the positive impact athletes can have off the field.
