Merritt Beason Selected First Overall in 2024 Pro Volleyball Federation Draft

The Atlanta Vibe made a major statement in the 2024 Pro Volleyball Federation Draft, selecting Merritt Beason as the first overall pick. Beason, a standout talent and one of the most dominant players in NCAA Division I volleyball, brings a powerful skill set and proven leadership to the league’s top-seeded team.

The Vibe acquired the No. 1 overall pick through a strategic trade with the Indy Ignite, giving up the second and ninth overall picks in this year’s draft, as well as receiving Indy’s third-round pick in the 2025 draft. The bold move signals Atlanta’s commitment to building a championship-contending roster.

“We knew trading with Indy was a bold move, especially parting with our ninth overall pick, but it was a strategic decision we firmly believe will pay off,” said Atlanta Vibe head coach Kayla Banwarth. “This trade not only strengthens our roster for the upcoming season, but it also positions us for long-term success while giving us a significant advantage having Indy’s third-round pick next year.”

Beason’s Stellar Collegiate Career

Beason has been a force on the court throughout her collegiate career. In 2023, she earned AVCA Region Player of the Year honors and an All-Big Ten First Team selection while captaining Nebraska to another successful season. She recorded 455 kills, the ninth most in a single season for a Nebraska player, and 106 blocks, showcasing her ability to dominate both offensively and defensively.

As a Cornhusker, Beason helped lead her team to a remarkable 66-3 record during her time with the program, averaging 3.38 kills per set over 217 sets played. In 2023, she powered Nebraska to an NCAA Championship appearance, finishing the season with an incredible 4.496 points per set.

Prior to transferring to Nebraska, Beason starred at the University of Florida, where she earned All-SEC First Team honors in 2022 and All-Freshman Team honors in 2021. During her time as a Gator, she tallied 565 kills and averaged 0.765 blocks per set, further establishing herself as one of the nation’s premier players.

A Winning Addition for Atlanta

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Merritt Beason to the Atlanta Vibe family,” said Colleen Craig, owner of the Atlanta Vibe. “With her experience at the highest collegiate level, we believe she’s the right fit to help us push for a title in the coming seasons.”

Beason’s leadership and playoff experience with Nebraska will bring invaluable skills to Atlanta’s roster as the Vibe look to build on their success from the Pro Volleyball Federation’s record-breaking inaugural season. With her dynamic playing style and proven ability to perform under pressure, she is expected to make an immediate impact.

The Vibe still hold four additional picks in this year’s draft, aiming to add more top-tier collegiate talent to complement Beason’s arrival.

Beason’s Excitement for the Future

“This is an incredible opportunity to play for such a dynamic team with a winning culture,” Beason said. “With their success last year motivating them, I am ready to gear up and strive for that championship title.”

With the addition of Beason, Atlanta continues to position itself as a championship contender, and fans eagerly anticipate what the future holds for the league’s top team.
