Hey there, basketball fans! The Atlanta Hawks hosted two amazing youth clinics, getting kids aged 8-15 dribbling, shooting, and working together like pros! Whether you’ve got a future WNBA star or a budding Hawks player at home, the 10th annual Jr. NBA Week had something for everyone.
But wait—this wasn’t just about basketball. We’re talking science, tech, and life skills too! At the Northside Youth Organization, the magic happened.
“We are excited to tip-off the NBA season with the JR NBA and JR WNBA week and hosting these two clinics at NYO (Northside Youth Organization.)”said Sr. Director of Hawks Basketball Academy Chris Jacobs.
First up was the Lady Ballers Youth Basketball Clinic, powered by Google Cloud
The Lady Ballers Youth Basketball Clinic, kicked off with great excitement. As the WNBA season continues, the growth of women’s basketball is evident, marked by impressive marketing efforts and increased visibility. The overwhelming interest was reflected in an unprecedented waitlist for the clinic, which provided a unique opportunity for 60 aspiring young players. This event was more than just a typical basketball session; it aimed to elevate their skills both on and off the court, empowering them to excel in all aspects of the game.
Shooting for the Stars: Basketball Skills and Beyond
In addition to sharpening their basketball abilities, the girls dove into some seriously cool science and tech activities. It was the ultimate double feature—basketball and brainpower, giving these athletes skills that will set them up for success long-term.
Jacobs noted the collaborative effort with Google, highlighting that representatives were on-site to engage the girls in STEM activities. These science-focused exercises explored concepts of light and color, diving into the “how” and “why” behind what we see. This integration of STEM education not only enriched the clinic experience but also inspired the young athletes to connect their passion for basketball with broader scientific principles.
Coached by the Pros
Who better to learn from than the best? The Atlanta Hawks Youth Development Coaches were on hand to share their passion for the game. But these coaches weren’t just there to blow the whistle—they were mentors, teaching confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills that’ll serve these young athletes well after the game is over.
More Than Just a Game
Sure, the girls left with some sweet swag—t-shirts, sling bags, and water bottles—but the real takeaway? Lifelong memories, friendships, and a boost in confidence. This clinic wasn’t just about building better ballers; it was about empowering the next generation to be their best selves, both on and off the court.
Skills, Drills, and Thrills
Now, boys, we haven’t forgotten about you! The Jr. Hawks Youth Basketball Clinic was all about honing fundamental basketball skills. The young players learned the importance of teamwork, respect, and good old-fashioned hard work. The Hawks Youth Development Coaches were there to guide them through drills, 3-on-3 play, and more, helping them grow as athletes and individuals.
Jacobs emphasized the core values of the Hawks and the Hawks Basketball Academy, highlighting their commitment to developing the “total person.” He stated, “We want to give and provide these kids with opportunities to grow with the game of basketball, but also recognize that many aspects of the game translate into life.” This philosophy underscores their dedication to fostering not only basketball skills but also important life lessons that young athletes can carry beyond the court.
The Hawks truly delivered with these incredible clinics, turning Jr. NBA Week into a slam dunk for both the body and mind! By focusing on skill development and personal growth, they created an engaging environment where young athletes could thrive on the court while gaining valuable life lessons. It was a fantastic opportunity for participants to enhance their game and build confidence, making the week a memorable experience for everyone involved!
