Atlanta United announced it has transferred forward Giorgos Giakoumakis to Cruz Azul in Liga MX. The Greek goal-scoring machine provided so many thrills and made a name for himself with Atlanta United over the past year and a half, quickly becoming a fan favorite. His 24 goals in 41 appearances showed he had a knack for finding the back of the net. Now, the Greek striker is off to Mexico to continue his scoring ways with Cruz Azul of Liga MX.
“We’re grateful for Giorgos’ contributions during his time at the club and we wish him the best moving forward,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “This transfer illustrates the nature of operating in a global marketplace. With a lot of season left to play, we plan to strengthen the group during the upcoming Summer Transfer Window.”
Change brings new possibilities, but saying goodbye still stings. You’ve gotta feel for both sides here. As a fan, it’s tough to see a proven goalscorer like Giakoumakis go. But the club is looking ahead and trying to maximize his value. Major League Soccer’s Secondary Transfer Window opens Thursday, July 18, and closes Wednesday, Aug. 14.
It will be an interesting next few months in Atlanta. Let’s see how the roster shapes up for the stretch run.
Atlanta United (4-8-5, 17 points) returns to MLS Regular Season play Wednesday, June 19 against D.C. United at Audi Field 7:30 p.m. ET.
