Get ready for Atlanta United’s 2024 home opener this Saturday night under the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It’s been months since the Five Stripes last played in front of the incredible Atlanta United faithful crowd. After coming up short in the season opener a couple weeks ago against Columbus, Atlanta returns home hungry for its first win of the new campaign.
Standing in their way is none other than the New England Revolution, who will look to spoil the homecoming festivities. The Revs come into this match following back-to-back losses to start their season. But don’t let that fool you. New England still boasts some serious attacking talent, led by Spanish magician Carles Gil. He’s given Atlanta problems in the past, racking up three goals and four assists in eight career matches against the Five Stripes.
If Gonzalo Pineda’s squad can shut down Gil and avoid losing their marks in the final period they should give themselves a great shot at three points. Over the past two weeks, Pineda has focused on tightening up the connections and communication, especially in midfield and defense. Thiago Almada is now fully integrated after missing preseason. The backline tandem of Gregersen and Williams has had extra time to build chemistry.
The key will be jumpstarting an Atlanta attack that led MLS in home goals last season with 42. Get ready to cheer your lungs out, because Mercedes-Benz is about to come alive again. Saturday night at 7:30 pm ET can’t come soon enough. Let’s go Atlanta United!
