Atlanta United defeat Messi-less Miami 5-2

Ahead of the FIFA International break, Atlanta United grabbed a 2-2 draw on Saturday September 2. at Toyota Stadium behind goals from Giorgos Giakoumakis and Saba Lobjanidze. Thiago Almada tied the club’s single-season record with his 14th assist on the season.

In front of a crowd of 71,635 fans, Atlanta had a stellar performance with five goals made to secure the 5-2 win against Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Game Recap: Starting off the match Miami Leonardo Campana left footed a shot from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal to put Miami up by 1 point.

In the 36th minute from close range and assisted by Brooks Lennon, Tristan Muyumba even the score with his first goal for Atlanta.
Atlanta fans went wild five minutes later as  Miami Kamal Miller, put Atlanta United up by 2 with his own goal,
In the 44th minute Brooks Lennon right footed a shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner, marking his fourth goal of the season.
Coming back from the half in the 52nd minute Miami earned penalty after Abram was called for a handball and handed a yellow card. Leonardo Campana scored the spot kick, that landed in the bottom left corner slicing the lead to 3-2.
In the 76th minute Giorgos Giakoumakis netted a right footer, making it his 14th goal of the season. It was also Lobjanidze’s first assist for Atlanta.
In the 89th minute the Homegrown Tyler Wolff was able to regain possession midfield with an interception. Wolf fired the ball into the right side of the net to seal and conquer Miami in a 5-2 must win victory.
With the five goals scored in the match marked the second time this season (March 18, Portland)
With only five matches left the win tonight was crucial for the Eastern Conference race to the playoffs.

Tonight, they showed heart, passion, intelligence, good football, but also, they showed a good mentality.”said Atlanta United Head Coach Gonzalo Pineda.
