On Saturday Atlanta United fell to Cruz Azul 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation. With the result, Cruz Azul secured the final spot in the group to advance to the Knockout stage.
This week Atlanta announced it has permanently transferred Marcelino Moreno to Coritiba FC of Brazil’s Série A.
Moreno had been on loan with the Brazilian club since January of this year, and the club exercised its option to permanently transfer him this summer. The transfer has now been fully executed and is effective retroactive to July 15.
Atlanta signed forward Jamal Thiaré as a free agent through the 2024 season, winger Saba Lobjanidze (Sah-bah Lobe-jah-neat-zey ) from Turkish Süper Lig side Hatayspor through the 2026 season and winger Xande Silva from French side Dijon on loan for the remainder of the 2023 season with an option to purchase.
Silva will occupy an international roster slot pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa..
The Georgian international, Lobjanidze will occupy a Designated Player spot and international roster slot pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
30 year old Senegalese striker, Thiaré will occupy an international roster slot pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
Major League Soccer’s Secondary Transfer Window opened on Wednesday, Jul. 5, and closed Wednesday, Aug. 2.
It was also announced Atlanta United has acquired a 2023 international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC in exchange for $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money.
Atlanta United (9-7-8, 35 points) returns to action in MLS Regular Season play Sunday, Aug. 20 vs. Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field.
