Recap: Dream vs. Sun

Ahead of the Dreams home matchup with the Connecticut Sun, the WNBA’s announced today’s game is officially sold out. It marks the team’s seventh home sell-out of the season in only ten games for the Dream at Gateway Center Arena so far this season.  

The Dream’s seven full-capacity games pace the league so far this season, with the Washington Mystics coming in behind them with five sell-outs. 

Last year the Dream finished with eight sold-out games, the second-most in the WNBA last season, and are on track to sell out most of their home games this season.  

Lets’ talk about Allstar Break: First time Allstar Cheynne Parker and Allisha Gray joined by two-time All-star Rhyne Howard in the 2023 AT&T WNBA Allstar game on Saturday July 15.  Atlanta was one of only three teams with three or more players in the game, joining New York (3), Las Vegas (4). All three players scored in double digits, combining for 40 Howard led with 16, Parker put up 14 and Gray finished with 10. All three players hit a four-point shot in the game, with Parker leading the team going 3-4 beyond the arc. Howard led Team Wilson bench with three assists.

The Dream head into today’s match having the 7-game winning streak snapped after the Sun had a second half 82-71 comeback win on Thursday in Connecticut.

 

Game Recap: In the first two quarters the Dream found themselves in the position of not being able to land shots. The Sun swiftly took advantage of the lack of offense Atlanta displayed.

 

It was early in the 3rd quarter Atlanta gained traction and was able to narrow the scoring gap by 1 point. The Sun quickly pulled away and took a 4 point lead. The ball movement on the floor became fast, and at times Atlanta was able to continue the back and forth. With seconds left in the 3rd the Dream begin to lose steam, and the Sun led 67-54.

In the final period Atlanta tried to step up the offensive efforts but the deficit was too large to overcome. In the end Atlanta fell to the Sun 86-78. The Dream’s record against the Sun falls to 28-31 all-time and moves to 18-11 when playing in Atlanta.

Rhyne Howard led the team in scoring 22 points, making it her 20th career 20-point game (ninth of the season). With Howard’s 22 points, she officially passed Renee Montgomery’s Dream career record for made three-pointers, taking third place in the franchise records book. Montgomery finished her two-year career with the Dream with 146 made three’s, and after her four made today Howard now has 149 behind only Tiffany Hayes (325) and Angel McCoughtry (233). Howard also had a career-high four blocks and added two steals.

 

Up Next: Atlanta will return to action on Tuesday to face the Phoenix Mercury at Gateway Center Arena. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM.
