Falcons Return Home for a Blockbuster Win

Coming off of the most talked about controversial penalty of the week, with Grady Jarrett being flagged by referee Jerome Boger for tackling Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, that later had  Brady fined $11,139 for attempting to kick Jarrett. The Falcons returned home to the Mercedes Benz to face the 49ers.

This is what happened… Early in the first quarters Mycole Pruitt scored his first touchdown as a Falcon, and eighth of his career, the two-yard catch opened Atlanta’s scoring.

Atlanta’s defense scored a touchdown when Jaylinn Hawkins recovered  A.J. Terrell’s fumble, marking Atlanta’s first defensive touchdown since Week 14 in 2021.

The fumble recovery for a touchdown was the first since Week 13 of 2018 vs. Baltimore when OLB Vic Beasley returned a fumble 74 yards for a score.

At the end of the first quarter the Falcons held on to  14-0 lead.

Early in the 2nd, the 49ers displayed some dominance when they scored a touchdown by Brandon Aiyuk.

A few minutes later Aiyuk scored again to even the score.

Atlanta came back in the game with a touchdown by quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Mariota three-yard rushing touchdown, was the 16th of his career and third of the season .

At the half Atlanta continued to lead San Francisco 21-14.

In the 3rd quarter Kyle Pitts scored his first touchdown in America and in the Mercedes-Benz stadium.

In the end the Falcons dominated the 49ers through out the game, and Mariota had the best darn game as a dirty bird.

Sunday marked Mariota’s 10th career game with at least one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown, tied for the 12th most since he entered the league in 2015.

“We got a great group of guys that truly believe in the culture being built here.”said Mariota.

Atlanta’s offense rushed for more than 150 yards for the fifth time this season, marking the third time Atlanta has eclipsed 150 rushing yards in five of the first six games of a season in franchise history and the first since 2006.

“Three years ago, I was benched in this week. And you go through a process of kind of looking within and reflecting, and throughout that journey for me, you know, I kind of knew that I had to find my confidence to be able to play at a high level. So, when you get your confidence taken away from you, it is tough as an athlete, because I think that’s truly your only mental weapon that you have. So, to be able to build myself back up through the Raiders organization, through the Atlanta organization, through these teams and my teammates and the quarterback rooms that I’ve been a part of has been very important for me and critical in my career.”said Mariota.

On what a win like this does for a team’s confidence:

“I think perspective. Really all season I think this team’s been fairly confident. Certainly, there’s things that we gotta do better. That’s the whole — that’s the nature of this game. If you don’t have perspective, whether you win or lose, you can’t go back tomorrow and say, ‘Hey, what do we have to go fix? Who’s possibly going to be up next week?’. We’re not going to be satisfied. This team, we’re going to continue to grow and improve, and it’s just a fun group to coach. Really proud of those guys.”said head coach Arthur Smith.

Next Up:Week 7, Falcons (3-3) head to Cincinnati on Sunday to face the Bengals (3-3). Kick-off is at 1:00 PM.
