Controversial Penalty Saves Bucs in Week 5 Win Over Falcons

With a penalty called late in the game Tom Brady and the Bucs took full advantage and captured a 21-15 win over the Falcons at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday.

Let’s talk about the two late touchdowns by the Dirty Birds– Avery Williams glided pass the Bucs D for an eight-yard run.

Then there was a 19-yard pass from Marcus Mariota to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus, that kept Atlanta within arm reach of their third straight win.

The dramatic ending came when Grady Jarrett hurled Bucs quarterback Tom Brady down to the ground. This play seemed to be the opportunity Atlanta needed to take control of the ball and score, but referee Jerome Boger threw a flag.

The roughing-the-passer penalty called allowed the Bucs to run out the clock and win the game.

As for Brady … and his thoughts on the play? “I don’t throw the flags,”  Brady said.

“I mean it is what it is. Unfortunately, you can’t leave this game up to the refs. I thought if we would have been better on offense early on in the game, we would have had the opportunity to win and not have that scenario come into play. It is what it is. Those guys call it the way they see it. You can’t frown in it, you can’t do much about it, it’s out of your control.” said Mariota.

Sunday marked the seventh time Mariota has rushed for at least 60 yards and the second time he has hit that mark as a Falcon.

“There are a lot of things we could have done. I am proud of our guys – they fought back, they always do. They gave us a chance. I have to look at things we can do better and see what we can do to coach better.” said Head Coach Arthur Smith.

Atlanta’s offense rushed for more than 150 yards for the fourth time this season, marking the fourth time Atlanta has eclipsed 150 rushing yards in four of the first five games of a season in franchise history and the first since 1986.

Falcons Update:  The Falcons have traded inside linebacker Deion Jones to the Cleveland Browns, the teams announced Monday. Atlanta will also send its 2024 seventh-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Cleveland’s 2024 sixth-round pick.
