Atlanta United will host Chattanooga FC in the Third Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia between April 19-21. The date and time will be announced at a later time. All 2022 U.S. Open Cup matches will be available on ESPN+. A knockout style competition, the U.S. Open Cup (USOC) is the longest-running soccer tournament in America and third-longest in the world. This year’s champion will be automatically placed into 2023 Concacaf Champions League.
This marks the first competitive meeting between Atlanta and Chattanooga, with the two sides meeting twice before in preseason friendlies. Atlanta United played its first ever preseason match Feb. 11, 2017 against Chattanooga FC, winning 4-0 at Finley Stadium. The clubs met again during the 2021 preseason at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground.
Unlike MLS Regular Season matches, USOC matches cannot end in draws. Should the two teams be level at the conclusion of the 90-minute regulation, they will play two 15-minute sessions. In the event the score is still tied after an additional 30 minutes, the match will head to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
Atlanta United returns to action Sunday when it travels to face Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium. The match is set to kick-off at 1:30 p.m. EST and will be nationally broadcast on ABC/ESPN Deportes.
