In an exciting thrilling night, the Atlanta Dream landed home court advantage when the team defeated the Dallas Wings, 76-72, in the first game of the 2019 WNBA season on  Friday nightat their new home State Farm Arena.

Jessica Breland led the team in scoring 17 points, including a free throw in the closing seconds to capture the win. Followed by Renee Montgomery put up 12 of her 15 points on the board in the first half, going 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc.

On playing a tough game to open the season, “It’s never an easy night in this league, you just don’t see a lot of blowout wins in the WNBA… you have to grind wins out because every team is good.” Head Coach Nicki Collen.

(C) Elizabeth Williams, on her night, defensively. “At the end of games, Coach trusts us to get stops and that starts with one-on-one defense… we know our defense is what anchors us. It’s fun blocking shots, I love blocking shots, I love watching Bre [Breland] block shots, we feed off of each other… our defense is what carries us so when we can start the season off proving ourselves in that way, it’s fun.”

(F)Jessica Breland, on blocking shots. “My mind is set on defense and rebounding but I’m focusing more on my offensive game by knocking down shots wherever I can but for the most part it’s the same mentality – let’s have a block party.”

The Dream return to State Farm Arena next weekend to host the reigning WNBA Champions, the Seattle Storm, on Friday, May 31 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
