My SMH moment of the week has got to be the annual 4th of July hot dog eating contest. The winner, 23 year old Matt “Megatoad” Stonie, beat favorite Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, by eating 62 hot dogs and buns! He won $10 000 and the coveted mustard yellow winner’s championship belt. Interviewed after the victory, Stonie said “We don’t just go up there and eat hot dogs. We practice for this. We prepare our bodies”. I’d love to know how the training goes for this. The victorious calorie count amounted to 17 360. That’s about 8 times more than the average adult male eats in a day. The women’s title was taken by defending champion Miki Sudo who consumed 38 hot dogs, adopting the strategy of eating the hot dogs separately and they soaking the buns in Crystal Light. In case the event didn’t have enough character, the spectacle also included a few chanting animal welfare protestors bearing anti-meat signs adorned with fake blood.
