Washington Mystics looking to defend home court as Seattle Storm leads finals series 2-0

Game 2 wrap up

Game 2 of the WNBA finals came down to the last seconds to determine who would escape with the victory…. literally.

All in a matter of 16.9 seconds left in regulation, Breanna Stewart missed a pair of free throws as her team was holding on to their 74-73 lead, the Mystics potential game-winning play resulted in a jump-ball scenario, and Seattle Storm guard, Alysha Clark, split a pair of free throws from the charity stripe giving Seattle a 75-73 lead. Ariel Atkins last-second heave from beyond halfcourt with 1.8 seconds left on the clock was the only hope that the Mystics had left in having a 1-1 slate.

Keys for Washington to win game 3

The Mystics went 0-16 from three in game two, a poor performance when you’re competing for a championship. Fortunately for them, the Storm did not shoot much better from long range, finishing the game at 26.1 percent on 6-23 shooting. Despite the Mystics bad shooting efforts from beyond the arc they managed to pick up from where they lacked by going 15-17 from the free throw line and 40.8 percent from the field. Getting a couple to fall in game three will be key to getting over the hump.

The Three Amigos

Not only does the Seattle storm have the MVP in Breanna Stewart who led the way in game two with 25 points, they also have Sue Bird and Jewel Loyd. Two players who can heat up at any moment. Last game Bird and Loyd combined for 21 of the Storms 75 points. If you know the duo then you know that was a quiet night. Nevertheless, their presence on the floor has to make the Mystics mindful of how easily they can get going. Need we not forget that Loyd’s 23-point performance spearheaded the 89-76 win in game one for the Storm. Sue Bird…. we will just leave it at that, she is not one of the all-time greats for nothing.

History throughout the 2018 playoffs

History has seemed to play a big part in the 2018 WNBA Finals. The Seattle Storm is one game away from being crowned champions. Teams who have gone up 2-0 in a winner-take-all game in the finals are 5-0. With that known fact the odds could be in Seattle’s favor… but history has also played a part on the Mystics side. This is the first time the team has reached the finals in franchise history. What does this mean? They too have some odds in their favor. Winning on the road is no easy task no matter what league you play in and Seattle has to pay the Mystics a visit before it is all said and done.

The Storm struggled to close out the series in the semi-finals against the Phoenix Mercury. Early on in the series, the Storm performed at a level that the Mercury could not match propelling them to a 2-0 advantage. A 20-point win for the Phoenix Mercury in game three had “we are not going out easily” written all over it. The Mercury found their rhythm at home and went on to tie the series, forcing five-games.

With that being said game three(s) may not be Seattle’s strong suit. Who’s to say that the Mystics can’t take advantage of being in front of their home crowd for yet another game three showdown?
